Upside uses a combination of a proprietary, specially-designed culture chamber with methods for speeding cellular growth to achieve its superior product. The skin is grown on a mesh that confers superior strength and handling.

The process for culturing our engineered skin product is as follows:
  • Digest cells from a sample of skin using proprietary process
  • Grow fibroblasts alone and separately, keratinocytes with fibroblasts and in conventional culture flasks
  • Add proprietary culture medium with fibroblasts to chamber
  • Fibroblasts settle on and attach to mesh held on frame (orange in diagram)
  • Chamber is inverted and frame holding mesh falls to the bottom.
  • Keratinocytes and fibroblasts mix is added to the chamber (the cell suspension contains mainly keratinocytes)
  • Cells settle on mesh and attach
  • The chamber is inverted again
  • Keratinocytes are now next to a gas permeable interface
  • Gas passing through membrane gives signal for epithelial cells to differentiate
  • Incubate
  • Skin ready to be transported to patient in same chambers
